Community

This Christian life is not meant to be lived in isolation but in close communion with God and with other people.

Why should we gather together?

Hebrews 10:24-25 ESV
Why should we meet together?
We need to encourage each other and keep each other on track.
Why do you think that some people would not want to meet together?
Most likely, they are not serious and don't want to mix with those who are because such people will challenge them to become serious.

Small Group

Matthew 18:20 (ESV)
What is the advantage of a small group?
People can be truly united and on the same page.
Is God with bigger groups? - In the same way?
God is present everywhere but a small group allows people to connect with each other and with God with a unity that is not possible with bigger groups.
Galatians 6:2 (ESV)
Can we truly bear one another's burdens in a big group? What do we need to do to bear one another's burdens?
To bear one another's burdens, we need to develop a level of trust that is much easier to achieve in a small group. In a small group, we can get to know each other well, develop trust and open up to each other. Then we can share one another's burdens.

Large Group

I Corinthians 11:17-22
I Corinthians 11:33-34
These passages are clearly talking about a larger group of people. What are some of the benefits and problems described in this group?
Benefits:
Those who are genuine and those who are natural leaders can be recognised.
Problems:
People can just think of themselves, act selfishly or start disagreements.
What can we learn from this passage, as individuals and as a group?
Individual:
I must consider others
Group:
There will be divisions but these must not lead to arguments or cliques.
I Corinthians 14:26-33
There is a lot in this passage. What are some things that stand out to you.
It is possible that everyone has something to contribute and if they do, they do they should be given an opportunity to do so.
Everything should be done for mutual benefit - building up.
Tongues should be allowed but must not dominate the meeting.
In a formal meeting, tongues should only be allowed if there is someone to interpret.
Prophets should be allowed to speak but people should consider the validity of the word.
Anything that leads to confusion should be rejected.
Consider now the benefits of a large group, like this one with a small group.
Large group:
Many people = many ideas and more input.
Small group:
The greater level of unity makes it easier to have serious prayer and/or Bible study.

Structure

1 Peter 5:5
This is known in the church as covering. What do you think this means?
Each one should have someone they look up to for guidance.
What about the 'elders'? To whom should they be subject?
They should submit to trusted friends or other elders with a similar level of experience.
1 Corinthians 16:16
What does this level of subjection look like?
It means we should be ready to accept guidance from those around us. Ultimately, we are subject to God and should judge any guidance against God's Word.
Ephesians 4:11-12
God gave us 5 types of people to equip us. What can each of these do for us?
Apostles:
Apostles are sent out to begin new ministries. They can teach us all leadership, even if we are not going to be apostles.
Prophets:
Prophets hear special words from God. They can teach us to hear from God and to prophesy even if we are not going to be prophets.
Evangelists:
Evangelists are called to share the gospel publicly and lead large numbers of people to Jesus. They can teach us how to share the gospel even if it is only with our friends and family.
Shepherds:
Shepherds are called to look after God's people. They can teach us all to help those around us even if we are not called to be pastors.
Teachers:
Teachers are called to teach God's people about God and the Christian life. They can teach us how to explain things to people close to us that no one else can reach even if we are not called to be teachers.
Titus 1:5
What are elders and why was Titus told to appoint them?
Elders are people who are in charge of God's people. They are needed to keep order.
Titus 1:9
What sort of people should be appointed as elders?
Trustworthy people who know God's Word, can teach it and can deal with those who contradict it.
Acts 6:2-3
What are deacons and why do we need them?
Deacons are people who perform the mundane roles among God's people so that those with more critical jobs do not need to be distracted.
I Timothy 3:8-9
What sort of people should be appointed as deacons?
People who are strong in their faith and can represent God's people in a way that brings glory and honour.

Church?

In today's world, churches can be grouped into Traditional, Evangelical and Pentecostal. Within these groups, there are many denominations such as Anglican, Presbyterian, AOG, etc... In the light of this study what should our attitude be to all these different churches?
In Jesus day, the Jewish religion was corrupted by the traditions of the Pharisees and the Saducees. Jesus supported the temple and the synagogues but took issue with specific errors. We should support our churches but we should be in small groups full of people who are serious about Jesus.
Colossians 4:15
Where did these people meet? Can we surmise anything else?
They met in Nympha's house.
It was was probably a small group.
It was important to Paul.
